Radical Action To Unseat The Hold Of Monkey Mind by King Crimson

Radical Action To Unseat The Hold Of Monkey Mind by King Crimson

I remember tracking this down in Hong Kong's HMV when the CD came out in 2016. That HMV no longer exists. I had never listened to it from start to finish. This is one of the live captures from the last tour, recorded around 2015. A full listen is quite a heavy undertaking since many of the songs segue into one another, but is also quite an experience. There's little point in talking about the musicianship on display, it's stellar. The three drummers line-up may sound silly, but is interesting when you listen carefully, because there really are arrangements and roles: they don't plays the same thing, it's much more layered than that. Jakko Jakszyk is a fantastic vocalist for all the classic era tunes, there are moments when you really wonder if it's not Greg Lake or John Wetton, yet he's got his own thing too. The only downside to this three CD live record is that there is no audience sound, and that makes the whole thing feel a little sterile at times, I think. I'm not surprised Fripp would find audience cheers and claps disturbing, but to me they are part and parcel of the live recording experience. I just ordered Meltdown which is a similar package from 2017, I'm curious to see if it's also audience-less.
