This album has been on fairly heavy rotation since my friend Marcus gave it to me. Arun Ghosh is a British-Asian jazz clarinet player whose influences range far beyond jazz. While you might expect some Indian music influences as well (and there are some) even that is too narrow. There's rock (including prog) in here, there's some more atmospheric stuff, some pop, etc. This diversity of influences is definitely a strength, but may also be a bit of a weakness. Let me explain: Ghosh manages here to make an hour or so of instrumental music wheeze by, the album is very pleasant listening. Not a mean feat for a jazz player, especially moving around such diverse influences. At the same time though, and while the jazz chops of the musicians are not in question, it feels to me like it's a bit too "safe". Each tune has one or two compositional hooks, and surf onto that, but it's not always enough to be memorable. I realise after a few weeks that while I enjoy listening to the album, apart from the first track with has a definite (and very cool) Allman Brothers vibe, the rest fades away in my memory.
But where are you really from? by Arun Ghosh
