L'Attachement
A very French movie, L'Attachement starts when Sandra (a subtle and spot on Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi), a single by choice 50 something woman, has to look after a 5 year old kid whose parents (her neighbours) leave for the hospital for the birth of their second. When the dad comes home alone and in tears, you understand that the mother didn't make it. The movie is then about this strange relationship between Sandra and her next door neighbour who is now a widowed father of two. From that point onwards, it could go down the romcom route, and I thought a couple of times that it would, but the script is a lot more subtle and explores not only the late discovery of kids by Sandra but the meaning of loss. A very endearing movie.
