I bought Rush's 2112 about a decade ago, and while I didn't dislike it, I never went back to it after a few initial listens. I recently saw a video on Youtube about the bassline to YYZ and I thought "this sounds really good, maybe I should give them another try". So I got hold of "Moving Pictures", which features said instrumental. Unfortunately, while that track is just a good as the snippets of it I'd heard suggested, I really don't like the rest much. I think it's down to two things that actually converge: the sound is straight out of 80s commercial rock, glossy, overproduced, sanitized, which deters from the often ambitious compositions; and while I really admire Geddy Lee's bass playing, I found his voice to be a caricature of 80s American rock (again). So weirdly, while I can't deny the prog nature of the music, it sounds way too mainstream for me.
