Matters of Life and Death part 2 by Childish Japes
There are a few music youtubers that seem to have a great talent to part me with my money, and Yogev Gabay is one of them. I think this one is the third album I buy on the basis of his deconstruction of rhythms, and the interesting thing is that while his stuff usually focuses on fusion and/or prog metal, Childish Japes is neither. In fact, after I'd purchased the album and upon first listening to it, I was surprised to see that the closest genre I could think it would fit into was classic soul. The Norah Jones -esque vocals of guest singer Joanna Teters is part of the reason, for sure. But it's a bit more complicated than that. 60s and 70s soul has all these classic hooks, a good number of expected progressions or patterns. Childish Japes play around with these, but never quite conform. You could be forgiven for thinking this is run of the mill soul, but it's not. The harmonies, the rhythmic patterns and the arrangements subtly subvert the form. I love that, and have found the album incredibly enjoyable.
