Stronger than Dirt by Big Mama Thornton
I'd heard old recordings of Big Mama Thornton, including the infamous Ball and Chain and the epoch defining Hound Dog. I own the AFBF boxed sets where she is quite prominent. But I hadn't really heard any of her (comparatively) more recent recordings. Stronger than dirt was recorded in 1969 with a line-up of old blues players that still had a lof ot fire in them. It's lush and very well produced, but it doesn't prevent Big Mama from throwing her heart at you with her deep and occasionally growly voice. She belts out blues standards like Born Under a Bad Sign or Rolling Stone, but also gospel (I shall be released) and even soul with Let's go get stoned. A winner throughout, amazing to listen to.
