Algues Vertes by Inès Léraud and Pierre van Hove

This is a documentary graphic novel about the infestation of green algae on the beaches of Brittany and the very real consequences for human health that it has had and keeps having. Unfortunately, addressing the issue requires addressing the intensivist agricultural model that Brittany (and more broadly France) have embraced, and that's clearly something our politicians are not willing to do. They will go to extremes to get people to shut up, and this is what the graphic novel documents. Not an easy topic, masterfully dealt with. At a time when the French parliament voted a law to repeal various bans of toxic fertilisers, supposedly to support farmers (but in reality to support the agro-business that sucks the revenues and the life of farmers), this is a vital read.
