Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie
When I read the first volume of this trilogy a few months ago, I mentioned that I had enjoyed the novel, but couldn't quite see where Ann Leckie was going with the series. I am, if anything, more puzzled by this second volume, which was a perfectly enjoyable read but also veered more forcefully towards adventure and classic SciFi themes than even the first one. Nothing wrong with that of course, but I kind of expected more meaning and substance. I'll read the third and last one, if only for the pleasure of figuring out where it all goes, but I'm guessing this wasn't what I anticipated.
