More Life by Jeff Lang

More Life by Jeff Lang

I have long been a fan of Jeff Lang's understated but masterful Australiana music, sitting somewhere in between country, blues, rock and folk. Not only is Lang a masterful musician, he's also a fantastic writer, with deep and poignant lyrics. I have been listening to his latest album More Life quite a bit a lately, and I really enjoy it, although it departs from previous releases in a number of ways. Lang has guests, mostly singers, but also musicians on every song. This makes the listening experience less focused than on his solo albums, but also opens up to a broader range of genres. The opening duet with John Butler is very powerful, as is the world infused title track More Life, and I probably need to listen to it a fair few times more to connect with many of the other songs, but all in all I like it. Maybe not the first Jeff Lang album I'd recommend, but a very good one all the same.
