Kaamelott Second Volet, Première Partie
I'm a fan of Kaamelott (although as you'll see not unconditional) and so when I had the opportunity to go see this with my son on his birthday, I let my qualms about the first movie aside. For those who don't know, Kaamelott is a French TV series set around Arthurian myth. It had 4 seasons in short format (5 minute episodes) mostly comedy, but getting gradually deeper, followed by 2 seasons in long format (45 minute episodes) which, while still funny, focused on story primarily. And then, 10 years after the end of the 6th season, a feature length movie, first of an announced trilogy. Second Volet, Première Partie is the first half of the second movie. I had reservations about the first movie, which I felt lacked pacing, focused too much on fan service as opposed to resolving the story, and introduced way too many new characters. I hoped the second movie would tighten things up, but so far the opposite has happened. There are 4 or 5 parallel story arcs, some of which feel completely irrelevant and unrelated and only one of which actually works story wise. The movie ends on a cliffhanger, but by then you don't care so much anymore. Visually the movie is great, but unfortunately that's the only great thing. And worst of all, Astier (the director) has managed to ruin the one character that he had managed to set up as consistently creepy and mean since the beginning, and turn him into yet another buffoon. Disappointed.
