Left Handed Girl
It was the Taiwan, or rather Chinese speaking South East Asian metropolis angle, that led us to go see Left Handed Girl at the movies. It's a slice of life movie with a good dose of social realism on top. We focus on a middle-aged woman who moves back to Taipei with her two daughters, one a young adult and one a 5 year old. The latter is the left handed girl whose grandfather berates her for using "the devil's hand". There are moments of lightness and grace, moments of incredible tension, and while it's not a feel good movie, it kind of ends with a resolution that's hopeful. Loved it to bits, and not just because these familiar vistas of Asian cities reminded us of earlier episodes of our lives.
