Live by The Beat

Live by The Beat

The Beat (or BEAT) is a supergroup formed of two of the four members of the 1980s incarnation of King Crimson (Adrian Belew on guitars and vocals and Tony Levin on basses) and two additional members not in the original KC but highly regarded in their respective carreers: Steve Vai on guitars and Danny Carey on drums and percussions. Together the quartet revisits the 80s Crimson repertoire as showcased in the three albums Discipline, Three of a Perfect Pair and Beat. This is a live recording put together mostly from an LA gig captured towards the end of their 24/25 tour. I suspect it's not an actual set list, but the flow is just perfect, and the intensity builds up gradually, starting with some of the more obscure tunes from the 2nd and 3rd album, including some pretty wild stuff. Then, progressively, we get into more familiar territory, and by the end it's bang/bang/bang. Fantastic drive, superb musicianship, and versions that feel sufficiently different that you can really enjoy the novelty of them. Possibly the most astounding thing is how clear and powerful 82 year old Adrian Belew's but to be honest, the entire cast just delivers, and then some. Fantastic live recording.
