Marcel et Monsieur Pagnol

Marcel et Monsieur Pagnol

I really like Chomet's cinematic style of animation as showcased in Les Triplettes de Belleville and l'Illusioniste, so I was quite confident I would enjoy this animated biopic of Marcel Pagnol's life. It turns out to have been a bit of a disappointment. The movie is gorgeous, full of Chomet's unusual graphic style, lush with colours and sound. Where it fails in part is in its relative coldness. Only in the later third of the movie is there an emotional thread that emerges, and that makes the first part dry.
