The Bywater Sessions by Jon Cleary

The Bywater Sessions by Jon Cleary

Jon Cleary is undoubtedly one of the most exciting musicians in New Orleans, but his recorded output isn't always on level with the sheer excitement he is live. I'm glad to say that with the Bywater Sessions, we may finally have the quintessential Jon Cleary on record. From the opener So Damn Good, exhilarating, infused with gospel and wonderfully, relentlessly frantic to the bluesy yet latin tinged closer Unnecessarily Mercenary, there is not a dud in this album. I think it's down to production, a bit rougher around the edges than in previous albums, and the choice of material, very Caribbean. Whatever the reason, this is a gem of an album.
