John Butler in concert at La Carrière
It's not you John, it's me.
Back in the late 00s I booked a ticket to see John Butler with the stellar backers of that time, Michael Barker on the drums and Shannon Birchall on electric and acoustic bass, but sadly I could not make it due to a work obligation. So when I saw that John was playing in Nantes and that Michael was on drums, I bought a ticket. But I should have expected that an international act such as this would play a large room, standing only, and I can no longer enjoy my music in such a context. I need more intimacy (with the musician, got plenty of intimacy with the crowd...) and better sound to really get into the music. I also need musicians to let loose to really get transported and while there were a few moments of grace where John seemed to go off-script, it felt too much like a pre-ordained show to me. But again, John Butler and his excellent crew were not to blame, it's just no longer the type of concert I can really dig. This sounds all very negative but it was an enjoyable evening, it's just the last few concerts I saw blew my mind and this one didn't.
