Dungeon Club by Molly Knox Ostertag and Xanthe Bouma

A graphic novel about kids playing D&D may seem a bit on the nose right now with Stranger Things having exposed the idea to the mainstream, but believe me when I grew up it was nigh on unthinkable (although between 1984 and 1987 there was a « Donjons & Dragons » comic by Bosse and Darasse in the Journal de Tintin...) So while I knew I wasn't the young adult target audience, I thought I'd check this out, if nothing else to get it for my daughter. I don't think I will in the end. Both graphically and story-wise this is so close to earlier Raina Telgemeier graphic novels that she could probably sue for copyright infringement. Sure, its cute and wants to be heartwarming, but it also lacks subtlety on so many levels it's really hard to take it in. Discovering that this was an official WOTC licence was the last straw... It's not bad, and I suppose it might get 11-12yo kids excited about roleplaying games, but it's also not very good, and certainly not for me.
