Goran Bregovic and his Wedding and Funeral Orchestra

Goran Bregovic and his Wedding and Funeral Orchestra

My wife got some tickets for the whole family to go see this on the evening of my birthday. I wasn't feeling too good, but the creativity of Bregovic's compositions and the wild energy of his band made me forget my ailments for the duration of the concert. The music is, as you'd expect, exuberant, often in frantic sense, occasionally in a dramatic sense, but either way it's impossible not to get drawn in. The only minor downsides to the concert were an unsatisfactory sound in this amphitheatre (the opening, when the horns were in the audience, sounded better than the subsequent concert) and the occasional use of pre-recorded parts, which I guess are due to the orchestra already being quite sizable. It's not a major component of the music, so you can easily ignore it (I'm not even sure that many people noticed) but to me it takes away from the authenticity of the live performance. That said, it was a great concert. Highlights to me included a slow dirge with the two female singers in harmony, that brought tears to my eyes, and the entire finale sequence that just got wilder and wilder. If Bregovic brings his band your way, don't miss out, go see it.
