Kala Mandala Playbook

Kala Mandala Playbook

I've been looking forward to reading this for a while now. After the two authors of a Thousand Thousand Islands, a South-East Asian fantasy zine that I really love parted, Munkao launched a series of adventures set in a South-East Asian inspired setting, but he also designed a system for it, based heavily on Into the Odd / Cairn for the mechanical side, but with a distinct flavor. This Playbook is the beta version of the system, out for his Patreon supporters, and I read it this week. The first and most important thing to me is that Kala Mandala is full of South-East Asian flavour, but also delivers a functional system that gives you a starting point. The hurdle to know how to use a Thousand Thousand Islands was too high for me, it's just been lowered dramatically, which means that not only Kala Mandala adventures but also older zines become full of playable material. If you like Cairn and an exotic feel to your games, then Kala Mandala is the deal. I'm sure there are things that will need to be tweaked, but I'm super happy about it and will definitely run some games.
