La Bataille de Gaulle - partie 1 : L'Âge de Fer
The figure of Charles de Gaulle is such a looming one in French history and politics that the idea of a Hollywood style semi-biopic of De Gaulle's second world war actually appealed. The fact that is was a two parter appealed a bit less, but we went nonetheless, the whole family, not knowing if our teenage daughter would be interested. Turns out that despite the length of this first movie, it was hard not to be interested. First, the main roles, De Gaulle, Churchill, Darlan, Jean Moulin and Fernand are all wonderfully cast and superbly played. Second, the relationship between De Gaulle and Churchill is wonderfully played, this mix of shared francophilia, national pride and tension between realpolitik and ideals is really well staged. Third, the filmography is indeed very Hollywood, gorgeous looking and spectacular, something we are not used to in French movies. All in all, it's a success I would say and I immediately wanted to see the second part.
