Racines by Lou Lubie

Racines by Lou Lubie

Lou Lubie is a young author whose previous book "Et à la fin, ils meurent..." I particularly enjoyed. Racines is very different, and although the lead character goes by a different name, I rather get the impression that it's largely autobiographical. Racines is about hair, and more specifically about "afro" hair. It's a journey of discovery: our lead is white skinned but has part black ancestry from Reunion Island, and for the longest time she struggles to  like herself with the afro hair that nature gave her. She does all kinds of treatments to them before she realises that she's actually ruining her hair (and her wallet). Considering this is a topic I never thought I would be interested in, I was surprised at how engrossing and entertaining the book is. It's probably not one I'll read again, but I certainly recommend reading it.
